We manufactured this chuck shaft utilizing the live tooling on our lathe for a more efficient production process, achieving production in fewer operations.
Description
A client based out of Boston contacted Imperial Carbide, Inc. to manufacture a chuck shaft for use in an optical application. On seeing the customer-supplied blueprint (which specified for an overall part dimension of 2.188″, a length of 10.392″, and product volume of 50 units), we knew that our experience in CNC turning and surface grinding would quickly carry the day.
Employing a Doosan Puma 240M CNC lathe, we were able to machine the 86L20 Steel to the rough part dimensions as required. After heat treating the part to 58 Rockwell, the part was processed with a Myford OD-ID grinder, a state-of-the-art machine that has the ability to grind diameters concentric within a mere .0001″. Upon completion of the grinding process, the part went to the Sodick AQ537L wire EDM, where we were able to finish the chuck shaft, made to the customer’s specification, with a total weight of 3.60 lbs. and a tolerance tightness of ±.0002″. Hard work and high technology are our twin trades, and by the end of the contract, our client was convinced they had made the right choice to purchase their tooling from us.
